Soil and root borne fungal pathogens like
species of Fusarium, Phytophthora,
Rhizoctonia, Sclerotium and bacterial pathogen like Pseudomonas solanacearum are the causal organisms responsible for
seedling wilt disease.
1. The lower leaves initially turn yellow and then fall off.
2. The yellowing proceeds towards the growing shoot and within a month the seedling dies.
3. The roots of affected seedlings get discoloured.
The disease can be managed by an integrated approach involving measures such as sanitation, cultural practices and use of fungicides. The disease can be effectively controlled by application of Dithane M-45 (0.3%) or Bavistin (0.2%) fungicidal solution. Also, treating the seed beds with 0.2% Bavistin solution before sowing prevents the occurrence of disease pathogens.
